Tate McRae knows love.
The “Greedy” singer has been in several relationships since she first rose to fame, starting with her first public romance with fellow Calgary, Alberta, Canada native Jonny Hader, whom she began dating in 2019. They were together for nearly two years before calling it quits in 2021. The same year, she began dating NHL player Cole Sillinger, whom she split from in 2023.
In January 2024, the popstar was linked to her current boyfriend, fellow music artist The Kid LAROI, after they stepped out for dinner together in Los Angeles, following rumors that they had been vacationing together in Mexico earlier that month. McRae, who notoriously sings ballads and pop hits about heartbreak and love, played coy about their romance for months — until the pair went Instagram official on her 21st birthday in July 2024.
During a January 2025 interview with iHeartRadio, McRae opened up about what she admires most about LAROI, saying, “He’s one of the most generous and giving people ever. All he wants to do is make other people feel good, and that’s so rare nowadays.”
On Feb. 24, McRae released a new album, So Close to What, which drew inspiration from her love life. During a conversation with Apple Music ahead of the album release, McRae shared that her song “Greenlight” was “a perfect way to describe the feeling of falling in love again and being terrified to do that.”
From her relationship with Cole Sillinger to her romance with her current boyfriend The Kid LAROI, here’s a look back at Tate McRae’s dating history.
Jonny Hader
McRae’s first known relationship was with Hader from 2019 through 2021. Although they never disclosed how they met and kept their relationship mostly private, the pair are both from Calgary. Additionally, Hader was listed as the camera operator on McRae’s 2020 hit, “you broke me first.”
Following their split, Hader has lived a life out of the spotlight, remaining private on his social media accounts.

McRae began dating Sillinger, a Columbus Blue Jackets ice hockey player, in 2021.
The pair had mutual friends through McRae’s brother Tucker, a fellow hockey player, and began dating after the Canadian NHL star admitted in an interview that McRae was his celebrity crush.
“He’s one of my brother’s friend’s friends so it all worked out,” McRae told Entertainment Tonight in 2022. “But it was really funny — I was like ‘I can forever hold this over you ‘til the day you die, that I was your celebrity crush.’ ”

The pair called it quits in 2023, leading McRae to delete all photos of Sillinger from her social media accounts. Although McRae has not publicly discussed their split, the “exes” singer opened up in a December 2023 interview with Eliott King about remaining on good terms with her former boyfriends — and cleared up any fan speculation about her songs having been written about them.
“I still have good relationships with my exes,” she said. “I’m not bashing them. Even the song ‘exes,’ it sounds like it’s a ‘diss your ex’ record, but it mostly is like dissing myself. It kind of talks about how bad I am in a relationship and just all the things that I do to sometimes self sabotage.”

McRae and LAROI were first linked in January 2024 when they were spotted stepping out for a dinner date. During a November 2024 interview with Mitch Churi, McRae shared that they were friends — sort of — for nearly three years before dating.
“We honestly weren’t the closest of friends, we were kind of like acquaintances, we always had awkward encounters,” she said. “Every encounter we had was just really awkward, and then yeah, something just clicked.”
Although they were seen holding hands on multiple occasions beginning in early 2024, neither confirmed their relationship for months, though LAROI told fans that his “girlfriend” was in the audience of an April 2024 concert, while McRae watched from backstage. After several months of fueling relationship speculation with subtle hints, the pair went Instagram official in July 2024.
One month later, the couple performed a duet together (and shared an onstage kiss!) at Madison Square Garden on her Think Later World Tour — which also happened to be their first time singing in front of one another. During a February 2025 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, McRae revealed that the couple used to “fake sing in front of each other all the time.”
“So, like, even when we were at our show last year, we were sitting in soundcheck like, ‘Are you going to sing first?’ ”

It wouldn’t be long until they would collaborate again, as McRae’s album So Close to What included an official duet track between the pair, titled “I Know Love.”
But, it turns out singing with LAROI was just as nerve-wracking for McRae this time around. She recalled to Jimmy Fallon that she experienced the “same kind of situation in the studio,” asking LAROI, “Can you, like, not listen?”
Additionally, during an album listening event with Spotify on Feb. 18, McRae said it was “a really funny process” because the pair “have never really taken each other seriously.”
She continued, “You know when you’re in a relationship, and you sing around each other, you don’t really sing. So, it’s a little stressful being in the studio, singing and writing in front of him, but it was a cool experience to watch him in his process.”
