WASHINGTON (WJLA) — A person who officials said might have been in an “altered mental state” harmed himself with a knife before turning it on six other people in a Northeast D.C. neighborhood Thursday afternoon, according to D.C. Police.
Portions of Montello Avenue and Simms Place, NE, in D.C.’s Trinidad neighborhood were closed off after police officers found four women and two men injured, with the suspect found lying on the ground on the 1700 block of Montello Avenue.

Police said they were called to the scene at around 3:22 p.m. for a stabbing investigation.
Investigators believe the adult suspect was under the influence of an “unknown substance” when he started harming himself with a knife and later attacked a female acquaintance while they walked down Montello Ave.
Shortly after, police said the suspect turned the knife on several others nearby, including a Grandmother and her two granddaughters who were getting into a car. Two people tried to stop the suspect and were injured.
At around 4:15 p.m., police said one person was taken into custody.
When the suspect was arrested, a knife was found in the grass nearby with what appeared to be stains on it.
Police said the suspect was taken to a hospital for surgery, while the six victims were taken to the hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition.
Police have closed the following roads as of 3:50 p.m.
- Montello Avenue between Mt. Olivet Road and Holbrook Terrace NE
- West Virginia Avenue between Mt. Olivet Road and Holbrook Terrace NE
D.C. Fire and EMS crews are on the scene, and road closures are likely to change, officials said.
