Ella Purnell Reveals What She Doesn’t Like About Fallout Role

Fallout increased Ella Purnell’s following among gamers outside of the League of Legends fan base. The actor says playing Lucy comes with unique challenges, especially after the character lost one of her fingers.

Ella Purnell fears she would be typecast into playing characters with dead fingers. During a MegaCon Q&A panel, she admitted that’s one thing she hates about her Fallout character. “That would actually be one of the worst things to happen to me,” she said (per Screen Rant). “You know how annoying it is to have that finger painted on me every single day? This finger is the bane of my life. It’s the worst thing.” Purnell was referring to Lucy MacLean’s “new” trigger finger, which was picked out of a litter of “spares” from a drawer. The Ghoul cut Lucy’s finger in Season 1 after she bit his off in Episode 4.

‘The True Delight of the Ghoul’: Fallout Showrunner on What Makes Walton Goggins’ Performance So Special

After becoming Fallout’s breakout character, Geneva Robertson-Dworet attributes Ghoul’s popularity to how Walton Goggins embodies “competency porn.”

Purnell said Fallout‘s effects crew has a pet name for Lucy’s dead finger, and it’s not flattering. “I think it was Mike Harvey, who was the makeup designer, and he started calling it poop finger and it caught like wildfire, and everybody started saying it, and then they, yeah, that’s the name of it now. It’s on the call sheet. It’s a number on the call sheet.” The finger is somewhat a celebrity behind the scenes, it seems, and Purnell has since dreaded every time she’s prepped for filming.

Ella Purnell Hopes Other Roles Won’t Have the Same Issue

“We tried certain things because they paint it, right?” she added. “I don’t know if you guys know this, that you use the most for everything, all the time. And then you have to take it off, you put it back on, it’s very annoying. I just have this, like, poop finger all the time. I have to tell people when I go home at the end of the day, like, this is… It’s okay, I’ll freak out, it’s just… Whatever, it’s just very annoying. So I don’t want to lose any more fingers. I just don’t want to lose any fingers. I’m over it, I’m over the trigger.

I just don’t want to lose any fingers. I’m over it, I’m over the trigger.

That’s too bad because she’s destined to wear that finger for longer, with Fallout Season 2 now in production.

Fallout’s Lucy Catchphrase, Explained By Ella Purnell

Ella Purnell explains the inspiration behind this moment in Fallout at the end of the first season.

Purnell’s experience is unpleasant but pales in comparison to her co-star’s, however. Walton Goggins previously described his transformation into The Ghoul, spending hours on a makeup chair wearing layers of prosthetics. Speaking to Collider, Purnell recalled filming Episode 3’s The Gulper scene with Goggins. “It was so tough,” she said “It was 100 degrees. Walton was sweating, because he was head-to-toe in prosthetics, and he’s wearing a shirt, a waistcoat, a jacket, and a hat. They could not have put him in more clothes if they tried. It was challenging.”

That scene also made everyone realize Fallout would be a hit. “There was slime everywhere, everyone was falling over, everyone was sweating. I was missing a shoe,” Purnell continued. “And my makeup artist, Mike Harvey, he was like, ‘You know, it’s the toughest shoots that make the best shows.’ Even though it was so tough, and the crew was struggling, the cast was struggling, and it was very tense, we all kind of knew. And we pushed through because we knew that we were making something really cool.”

Fallout Season 1 is streaming on Prime Video.
