1 arrested after Selma boy killed in weekend shooting

SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) – A teen is dead after a weekend shooting in Selma, according to police. Officers responded to the 1400 block of Weaver Street early Saturday, around 1:55 a.m.

Police identified the victim only as a 14-year-old boy, but Saturday evening the Selma City Schools system confirmed in a statement the victim was Jamarj Acoff.

“This is a challenging time for us all as we deal with the loss,” Selma Interim Superintendent Darryl Aikerson said in the statement.

Selma Police arrested an unnamed 17-year-old in connection to Acoff’s murder Saturday afternoon.

The suspect is being held at the Perry County Detention Center under no bond, pending a hearing.

A motive of the shooting has not yet been identified.

Aikerson said counseling services would be made available to students when students return to class starting Monday.
